STAND UP PADDLE BOARD with Kristy Mitchell Fri, Aug 25, 2017 at 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm
Standup paddleboard yoga brings a little fun and freedom to an otherwise earth-bound yoga practice. If you're looking for a new challenge, yoga on a stand up paddleboard will reinvigorate you and push you to become an even better yogi than you thought possible -- all while enjoying the natural splendor of floating on water.

Kristy begins her playful practice with a few grounding asanas like Cat-Cow Pose and Balasana (Child’s Pose) to get her balance. Then she moves on to more challenging standing poses such as Vrksasana (Tree Pose) and Virabhadrasana I (Warrior Pose I.

It’s a fun practice but with some serious benefits. Doing yoga on a surface that is constantly in motion fires up your core muscles, and strengthens muscles that aren’t called on in everyday practice. “Even Plank Pose is more challenging because your board is moving a little back and forth, and that added tipsiness activates your core and arms. You definitely feel these tiny muscles that don’t activate on the ground. says Kristy.

The challenge is part of the attraction, and it isn’t just physical. SUP yoga requires a different quality of focus—and not just when you’re doing the poses but also when you’re transitioning between them. For example, bringing your right foot between your hands from Downward-Facing Dog to come into Anjaneyasana (Low Lunge) can sometimes shift a board a few inches forward—even on the calmest water. The key is to make micromovements, adjusting alignment and weight distribution as needed and fixing your gaze on a point along the horizon, on the shore, or even on an outlying rock or tree.

The Svadhyaya 200 Hour Yoga Teacher Training, certified by Yoga Alliance, is an invitation for students and practitioners of all levels, backgrounds, and ages to engage in the conversation, practice and teaching of Yoga. Teacher training is an opportunity to dive deeper into your own personal growth and your love of all things yoga, or to become a yoga teacher. Allison & Kate create a solid foundation on how to teach yoga in a supportive environment to build your confidence as a yoga teacher. You do not need to want to teach in order to enjoy and grow through this program. We ask that students have at least one year of solid practice experience before joining the group to ensure that everyone gets the most out of the program as possible.

Attend all dates or complete makeup homework for what you missed

Enjoy a 2 hour workshop with Allison Sobel that discusses the science, philosophy and practical applications of meditation. Participants will be introduced to those above meditation practices and the principles on which they are based. There will be periods of silent sitting and walking meditation, as well as discussions. Taught by internist Dr. Adam Sobel, this class is a unique opportunity to study anatomy and physiology with a board-certified physician in the Philadelphia area. Dr. Sobel has been practicing medicine for over 20 years. He teaches A&P in a fun and easily understandable way!In this anatomy intensive, we will establish a great foundation for better understanding of bone and muscle relationships. Peeking inside our bodies in a more intimate way can help shed new light on the mysteries of what hides just below the surface. Our time will be spent on studying the skeleton and major muscle groups, kinesiology, and some partnering exercises, in a way that supports our yoga practice. This is suitable for all levels. This workshop is an excellent refresher for both yoga teachers and serious students.

Come join Sarah Rose Reilly, Experienced-Registered Yoga Teacher 200-hours in a weekend long Prenatal Yoga Teacher Training Certification.
In this 20-Hour Prenatal Yoga Training you will learn the Anatomy and Physiology of Pregnancy, safe yoga transitions, appropriate prenatal poses, verbal queues that support the pregnant form, hands-on physical assists, relaxation and meditation techniques to support the mom-to-be in pregnancy and into motherhood, and the business of Prenatal Yoga. This training includes two formal, full-length Prenatal Yoga Class Demos, time for the students to practice teach with each other, and a Prenatal Yoga Training Manual, and Continued Education Hours that you can register with Yoga Alliance.
Friday 6-9 PM, Saturday 8:30-6:30 and Sunday 8:30-7:00 with time for one hour lunch both Saturday and Sunday and timed breaks.
Since beginning her first yoga teacher training in 2004, Sarah has been bringing yoga to everyone from the Beginner Student to the Advanced Practitioner. One of her gifts is for making the heavy, esoteric yoga philosophy understandable by creatively weaving the teachings of the Sutras and the Bhagavad Gita into her classes. Sarah teaches Meditation as wells as Vinyasa, Restorative, and Mommy-and-Me, Prenatal Yoga styles, but she also has fun teaching an invigorating and challenging Spin and Barre Fitness class too. Sarah co-teaches Yoga Teacher Trainings in the Philadelphia area.
When Sarah isn't teaching yoga, she loves walking her dog Charlie in the afternoon, doing Mommy-and-Me Yoga with her daughters and laughing with her husband and little girls in the evening. This workshop will explore how to directly apply the tools of the Yoga practice to assist in healing common injuries, conditions and disease.
Topics covered will include:
Discussion of common conditions both physical and psychological such as arthritis,sports injuries, stress and anxiety and how Yoga can offer healthy practices to assist in healing.
Most common injuries that may be presented by students in a typical yoga class and how to address them safely with asana and modifications.
Review and practice of the most effective and therapeutic yoga asanas targeting all areas of the body (neck and shoulders, hips and low back, core strengthening).
Discussion of philosophy behind Yoga Therapy to provide a broad understanding of how disease is manifested in the body and linked to the subtle, energetic and emotional aspects of self.
Review of the different styles of yoga (i.e. Gentle, Yin, Restorative) and how each can or cannot be therapeutic based on the presentation of specific condition or disease.
This workshop will be presented by Marissa Paino, ERYT-500, and Certified Therapeutic Yoga Teacher. Marissa Paino has been practicing Yoga since 2005. She earned her 200 hour certification in 2008, RYT-500 professional Yoga Teacher certification in 2012, and in March 2014, certification as a Therapeutic Yoga Instructor, all from the Pranakriya School of Yoga Healing Arts founded and developed by Yoganand Michael Carroll, ERYT-500. Over the last year, Marissa has primarily focused her offerings on therapeutic yoga instruction to individuals, and workshops. She has over 2000 hours of studio and private teaching experience.
